CHAPTER 10

Brazrothan

The showers were loud and filled with chatter that I blocked out. Ellie was at our practice. I hadn’t even told her that I had practice. In fact, that was the first time I had played in a while. Coach asked if I could fill in and what I realized was how much I missed it. I missed all of it. The games, the team, and why? Because I was trying to be above all this college crap?

I was trying to prove that I was the only clear choice for valedictorian when I graduated? I still had senior year ahead of me. I still had this entire year to look forward to and I finally had something to celebrate. A mate. A mate. A mate. I had someone who was there for me even if she didn’t know how much that little coincidence had an impact on my performance. I couldn’t lose in front of her. No way.

“Patrick!” Thirst shouted though he was right next to me.

“What?” I blinked as I turned to focus on him.

“Damn, man, you got it bad.” He looked at my head and said, “Real bad.”

I ran my hand up and over my hair and my… oh shit. My horns. They were… down, like curling, which meant only one thing, I was taken. Off the market officially. Shit. I mean, I knew this might happen, but to present myself as committed when I hadn’t even discussed dating with Eleanor. I gulped and then focused until they were standing up again.

Thirst cracked up laughing at me and turned the shower to the sea water valve which he obviously preferred. His light blue coloring grew deeper and scales and other maritime accessories began to appear. Before I could turn my hot as it could get water off, he said, “Did you see who she was with?”

I nodded.

“Is it worth it?” he asked.

My brow went up.

He clarified, “Surrendering.”

“So far, yes. But uh… I’m the only one who knows what’s happening.” He laughed. “Besides you.”

“I’ve wanted that little witch since my brother brought her home.” He looked over at me. “I shouldn’t.”

“You haven’t.” I reminded him.

“I want to.” He rolled a shoulder.

“Are they together?” I knew they were not. Everyone knew Maxine Mayhem’s social status. She was a Mayhem after all and they were one of the richest and most notable families in several parts of the realm.

“No,” he said as we both turned off the faucets. “Doesn’t make it right or any easier.”

“No.” I imagined it did not. “Well, then. Stay away from her.”

“I didn’t show up at her practice today.” He did some merman equivalent to an animal shake that sent the salt water flying in all directions.

I dried off my face once more with the now damp dowel I was holding and frowned at him. He laughed again. He knew I hated when he did that and he always waited until I had my towel.

“Well.” I wrapped the towel around my waist as we made our way to the lockers.
